Butler Community College Adjunct Math Instructor
Andover, KS
Right now, I am currently working as an adjunct Math Instructor at Butler Community College for 12 years now. I am also tutoring 5-8 high school students, a couple middle school students. In surrounding area, but also on wyzant.com, which gives me students in any state. My biggest joy is helping students discover a way they can achieve their future goals.
I was born in Swift Current Saskatchewan, Canada. We moved down to the states in 1979, and grew up in Newton, Kansas.
I went to school Hesston High School where I graduated. Go Swathers!!! I attended my first year of college at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri. I transferred to Emporia State University where I received my teaching degree in Mathematics. Go Hornets!!! However, I went on and got 3 licenses to teach elementary, middle, and high school.
I have taught high school math in Wichita school system for 8 years from 2002 to 2010.
My Path to Butler:
I than took a few years off from teaching and worked in a doctors office in the records department. However, I still tutored off and on in the neighbor hood for a few years. Some of my relatives were taking classes at Butler and thought I should apply to tutor on campus a 12 years ago. However, they needed some help that semester teaching math study skills, and an instructor willing to go out to Rose Hill and teach a math class. Thus that was my start here teaching at Butler over 12 years ago. I have taught on our Eldorado Campus, Andover Campus, Rose Hill Campus, and our McConnell Campus. It depends on where they need me to fill in as an instructor. However, the last few semesters have been primarily at McConnell and Andover 5000 building Campus. I teach any of the math classes below College Algebra. I enjoy helping students get past there Math fears and prepare them for College Algebra.
Family:
I am the oldest of three. I have one younger brother and one younger sister. However, they are both 6 to 8 inches taller than me thus while growing up most people thought I was the youngest.
My Parents live in Hurst Texas, to be near the grand-kids. They have been happily married for 48 years. My dad is a retired Carpenter, that worked for the Wichita public schools for 39 years. My mom is a retired nurse after working in hospitals and home health for about 35 plus years.
Favorite Quote:
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
